STORY OF GBENGA ADEBOYE...
Adeboye was one of Nigeria’s most beloved comedians,
known for his unique voice,
storytelling style,
and ability to make people laugh without even showing his face.
He was born on July 12, 1959,
in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Gbenga Adeboye became popular in the 1980s and 1990s through his comedy audio tapes,
which were widely circulated across the country.
At a time when social media didn’t exist,
his voice alone made him a household name.
People often called
him “Funwontan”
and “Alhaji Commissioner”,
characters he created that became very popular.
His style of comedy was deeply rooted in Yoruba culture,
mixing humor with wisdom,
proverbs, and everyday life situations.
He could mimic different voices and personalities so well that
many listeners thought they were hearing multiple people in his recordings.
Gbenga Adeboye was also a radio presenter and actor.
He featured in several stage plays
and worked with other notable entertainers like King Sunny Adé,
adding comedy to musical performances and events.
One of the most remarkable things about him was how he built a strong fan base using just cassette tapes.
His works were played in buses, markets, and
homes across Nigeria,
making him one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian comedy.
Sadly, his life was cut short when he passed away on April
30, 2003, at the age of 43.
The widely reported cause of his death was complications from kidney-related illness,
which led to severe health problems before he eventually passed away.
Some reports at the time also suggested he had been battling issues linked to high blood pressure.
Even today, Gbenga Adeboye is remembered as a legend who paved the way for many comedians in Nigeria...
His influence can still be seen in the storytelling style of comedians who came after him.
