Abuja — The Presidency has hit back at Russian President Vladimir Putin following his recent remarks dismissing Nigeria as a “British branch in Africa.”

In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, the Nigerian government described Putin’s comments as “ignorant, disrespectful, and far removed from the realities of today’s Africa.”

According to the statement, Nigeria remains a sovereign nation with vast natural and human resources, and no foreign nation dictates her affairs.

“We are not Ukraine, neither are we anyone’s colony. We are the Giant of Africa, a nation of courage, innovation, and unshakable strength,” the statement read.

The Presidency further noted that Nigeria’s Armed Forces are among the best in the world, having demonstrated professionalism and resilience in peacekeeping missions across Africa and beyond.

“Our military has stood tall where others fell. From defending our borders to restoring peace in neighboring nations, Nigeria’s armed forces remain a symbol of strength and pride,” the statement added.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s independence, the government maintained that its foreign policy is driven by mutual respect, cooperation, and sovereignty, not by colonial influence.

“Our relationship with Britain and other nations is one of partnership, not control. 

Russia would do better focusing on its internal issues than mocking Africa’s largest democracy,” it concluded.

The response has sparked massive reactions across social media, with many Nigerians praising the Presidency’s boldness, while others urged the government to match its words with strong leadership and national pride.
