I've three houses and I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding–Muhammadu Buhari

According to Channels Television, Former President Muhammadu Buhari has shared that he sustains himself financially by renting out one of his two houses in Kaduna State. He made this statement while addressing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus at a meeting held on Saturday at the Presidential Banquet Hall of the Government House in Katsina State. The meeting focused on the upcoming local government elections in the state.

Buhari emphasized that during his tenure as president, he did not engage in corrupt practices. He defended his record, stating that Nigeria's complexities made it a challenging country to govern. The former president asserted that his wealth did not come from illicit means during his time in office.

The former president's remarks were made in Hausa as he discussed the challenges faced by leaders in the country. He pointed out that many Nigerians often failed to recognize the administrative difficulties involved in leading the nation and instead opted to blame their leaders both during and after their terms.

Buhari also revealed that he owns only three houses—one in Daura, his hometown in Katsina State, and two in Kaduna State. He stated that contrary to any claims of ill-gotten wealth, nobody could accuse him of corrupt enrichment during his presidency. According to him, his living arrangements reflect a modest lifestyle.

The former president explained that he rents out one of his houses in Kaduna to support his livelihood. He mentioned that the rental income was what he relied on to meet his basic needs, including food, after leaving office. Buhari's disclosure came at a time when discussions about transparency and accountability in leadership have become more prominent.

During his address, Buhari stressed the importance of these principles—transparency and accountability—for leaders in Nigeria. He urged current and future leaders to prioritize these values while in office. He reflected on the scrutiny that public officials face and the expectations that come with the role.

Buhari’s comments also touched on the broader context of governance in Nigeria. He noted that the complexities of running such a large and diverse nation often go unnoticed by the public, who tend to criticize leaders without understanding the intricacies involved in decision-making.

He said: “After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses, one in Daura and two in Kaduna, I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding.
