Court Slams Lagos Fake Alcohol Dealers with 40 Years Behind Bars

The Federal High Court of Nigeria has convicted two men for producing and selling fake alcoholic beverages in Lagos State, handing them a combined 40-year prison sentence.

The convicts, Otuorimuno Nelson Aziakpono, 58, and Ikegwuonu Davidson Ikechukwu, 28, were found guilty of producing, possessing, distributing, and selling adulterated and unregistered alcoholic drinks in Lagos.

According to a statement by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the conviction followed an enforcement operation carried out on December 3, 2025, at Kojo Street, Ijanikin, and Vespa Market. Authorities uncovered large quantities of counterfeit and unregistered alcoholic beverages during the raid.

Recovered items included fake versions of popular brands such as Hennessy, Jameson Irish Whiskey, William Lawson’s, and Gordon’s Gin. Officials described the products as d@ngerous, deceptively packaged, and unsafe for consumption.

Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned on eight counts related to possession of unwholesome products, manufacturing counterfeit alcoholic beverages, and distributing fake drinks in violation of relevant laws.

“The defendants were charged on eight counts bordering on possession of unwholesome products, manufacture and distribution of counterfeit beverages, and related offences under applicable laws,” the statement said.

NAFDAC, which prosecuted the case, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing unsafe products from entering the market. The agency warned that adulterated alcoholic drinks pose serious health risks and vowed to intensify enforcement nationwide.

It also urged members of the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office, stressing that public cooperation remains vital in the fight against counterfeit and h@rmful goods.
